Students Tackle
Challenge of EKGs
Second-year student
Madison McCulloch knows that rapidly and accurately interpreting
EKGs can be a daunting task for students.
To ease the learning curve, McCulloch -- in
his role as co-president of the Emergency Medical Student
Association -- worked with the Center for Trauma and Critical Care
Education to organize a pair of EKG workshops. Nearly 100 first-
and second-year students attended the first, full-day course, held
on the MCV Campus on a Saturday in January.
The EMSA has coordinated a number of new
training experiences for students, including CPR courses, an EMS
ride along program, and an ED shadowing program. An intubation
workshop is being planned for later in the spring semester.

Timed to augment the M2 Cardiology course and
the M1 Physiology Course's Cardiac Section, January's Basic EKG
Interpretation Course was taught by Vivian Biggers, MSN, RN, CS.
The workshop received tremendous positive feedback from the
medical students, who felt the training equipped them to handle
EKG interpretation in a timely and effective manner. A follow up
course, Advanced EKG Interpretation, is scheduled for February.
To make the workshop possible, McCulloch
secured support from the Annual Fund as well as from the
Curriculum Office, the Cardiology Department, and the Cardiology
Interest Group.
This type of
collaboration among many student groups for the educational
benefit of all the medical students is one of the goals of this

Appropriations Committee. The committee is made up of student
representatives from all four years who work with a faculty
advisor to select which requests from student groups will be
funded each year.
In addition to benefiting about 25
different student groups, Annual Fund gifts also support student
scholarships and faculty research. You can learn about how your
